When England needed a stand-in one-day opener in 2000, Trescothick took his chance. A true opener, he formed a habit of starting a series well. His first four England hundreds came in a losing cause, confirming his ability to keep his head while all around are losing theirs. After a disappointing Ashes series and World Cup, he was back to his best against Zimbabwe and South Africa in England's victorious 2003 NatWest Series. He returned to top form in the final and series deciding Test against South Africa by hitting his highest ever First Class Score. A double hundred in the first innings was followed by an unbeaten half century in the second to make him only the second player after Sir Don Bradman to achieve the feat. In the 2004 Test at Edgbaston Marcus scored a century in each of his innings -  being the first Test cricketer ever to do this at Edgbaston. This is the second ISM player to perform this feat as Michael Vaughan completed 2 hundreds in each innings at Lords in the first Test v the West Indies.

His return to action started with Somerset and his 2007 form, plus England's continued failings in one-day cricket, meant he was recalled to England's preliminary 30-man squad for the Twenty20 World Championships.
